CRF is a 41 amino acid neuropeptide secreted by the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus in response to stress. It stimulates the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) leading to the synthesis of cortisol, glucocorticoids, and mineralocorticoids. CRF release induces anxiety-like behavior, appetite suppression, and drug-induced neuroplasticity in rats and non-human primates.
