C8 Ceramid (d18:1.8:0) ist ein zellpermeables Analogon von natürlich vorkommenden Ceramiden. Im Gegensatz zu C2-Ceramid wird es innerhalb der Zellen metabolisiert, um natürliche Ceramide zu erzeugen und führt oft zu einem dramatischen Anstieg des zellulären Ceramids. [1] Aus diesem Grund kann die Behandlung von Zellen mit C8-Ceramid (d18:1.8:0) die Wirkungen einer Erhöhung des Ceramids genauer nachahmen als eine Behandlung mit kürzerkettigen Ceramidanaloga. C8-Ceramid (d18:1.8:0) vermittelt wahrscheinlich viele verschiedene biologische Aktivitäten, wie auch natürliche Ceramide dies tun. Es fördert die Differenzierung menschlicher Keratinozyten [2] und induziert Apoptose sowohl bei humanen Leukämiezellen als auch in der U937-Zelllinie.[1][3].
