ドコサヘキサエン酸は、神経組織、特に脳と網膜で最も豊富なω-3脂肪酸です。(±)7(8)-EpDPAは、シトクロムP450エポキシゲナーゼの作用によって生成されるDHAのエポキシ誘導体です。血漿や脳・脊髄組織中に自然発生し、ω-3脂肪酸の摂取後に増加します。(±)7(8)-EpDPAおよび他のDHAのエポキシ代謝物は受容体やチャネル活性を調節して多様な効果を引き起こし、血管拡張を促進したり、血管新生を抑制したり、炎症や神経障害性疼痛を減少させたりします。(±)7(8)-EpDPAは可溶性エポキシヒドロラーゼ(KM = 15 µM)の基質であり、それによって対応するジオールに変換されます。
