7-Methylguanosine 5′-triphosphate (m7GTP) has a high affinity for the eukaryotic initiation factor eIF4E and can be used to produce affinity media for capturing and purifying initiation factors. It can inhibit in vitro protein synthesis by binding to the translation initiation complex and is often used to study the structure of the eukaryotic mRNA cap and the mechanism of protein synthesis.
