4-hidroxi nonenal es un producto de la peroxidación lipídica derivado de ácidos grasos poliinsaturados ω-6 oxidados como el ácido araquidónico.[1],[2] 4-hidroxi nonenal se utiliza ampliamente como marcador de la peroxidación lipídica.[2] Exhibe diversas actividades biológicas, como citotoxicidad, actividad inhibitoria del crecimiento, genotoxicidad y actividad quimiotáctica.[1],[2],[3] 4-hidroxi nonenal inhibe la liberación de Ca2+ inducida por pro-oxidantes en las mitocondrias a concentraciones de 10-50 µM.[2]
