β-Epoxysitosterol is an Estrogen receptor α agonist. β-Epoxysitosterol accumulates in the plasma, aorta, liver, kidney and heart of hamsters fed with diets containing phytosterol oxidation products. β-Epoxysitosterol can be used in the research of liver cancer [1] [2].
In Vitro, β-Epoxysitosterol (10 μM) induces luciferase activity, a marker of estrogen receptor α activation, in estrogen receptor α-transfected HeLa cells[1]. β-Epoxysitosterol (120 μM; 24 h) reduces the viability of HepG2 cells to 73%[2].
