Oxindolylalanine, a tryptophan analogue, is an inhibitor of tryptophan indole-lyase (K i: 5 μM) and tryptophan synthase. Tryptophan indole-lyase is a bacterial enzyme which catalyzes the reversible formation of indole and ammonium pyruvate from L-tryptophan.
