As sulfur-containing compounds inactivate hydrogenation catalysts, Z has to be removed with strong acids, e.g. HBr in acetic acid. The S-benzyl group can only be cleaved applying very harsh conditions as sodium in liquid ammonia or HF at 20°C (Sakakibara), which may induce β-elimation yielding dehydroalanine residues.
