By competing with laminin for the cell surface receptor, the short peptide is able to inhibit cell attachment to basement membranes, thus preventing the formation of tumor metastases. YIGSR also promotes tumor cell migration and, moreover, mediates the adhesion of a variety of epithelial cells to laminin.
