Stigmastanol은 자연형식의 포화된 식물성 스테롤이고 콜레스테롤과 유사한 화학 구조를 가진 식물성 스테롤류 화합물에 속한다. Stigmastanol은 콜레스테롤 흡수를 억제해서 혈중 지질을 낮출 수 있다[2]. Stigmastanol은 고콜레스테롤혈증을 예방하고 치료하는 기능성 식품에 자주 사용된다[3].
PC12 세포에서 Stigmastanol(1µM, 2µM, 3µM, 4µM, 5µM, 10µM; 24h)은 D-갈락토스 유도 세포 사멸을 억제하였다[4].
Sprague-Dawley 쥐 모델에서 Stigmastanol(50mg/kg; 경구; 단회 투여)은 경구 투여 후 장내 콜레스테롤 흡수를 현저하게 억제하였다[5].
