LDAO (Lauryl Dimethylamine Oxide) es un detergente no iónico/zwitterionic que se puede utilizar para solubilizar y estabilizar las proteínas de la membrana[1]. La capacidad de descontaminación leve de LDAO le permite interrumpir eficazmente la estructura bicapa lipídica mientras mantiene la conformación nativa de la proteína[2]. LDAO se utiliza a menudo para solubilizar proteínas transmembrana (como los receptores acoplados a proteínas G) en membranas celulares bacterianas o de mamíferos mientras se mantiene su actividad funcional[3]. LDAO puede afectar indirectamente la actividad de la H+-ATPase al disolver la estructura de la membrana mitocondrial, regulando así el proceso de hidrólisis ATP [4]. LDAO añadido a las reacciones químicas de clic sin cobre aumentó significativamente la eficiencia de unión de las variantes de CRM197 a los Streptococcus pneumoniae polysaccharides[5]. La adición de LDAO al medio de crecimiento de Rhodovulum sulfidophilum resultó en cambios drásticos en la biosíntesis de carotenoid[6].
