MEGA-8 es un tensioactivo de glucósido no iónico obtenido por condensación del grupo octanoilo (acilo de cadena recta C8) con N-methylglucamine[1]. MEGA-8 se caracteriza por su suavidad y naturaleza no desnatural, con una concentración crítica de micela (CMC) que prácticamente no se ve afectada por la temperatura en el rango de 5–40 °C, y su CMC es de 70 mM en condiciones sin sal y de 5–64 mM en condiciones de alta y baja sal[2][3]. MEGA-8 se utiliza generalmente en la preparación de biomateriales o compuestos orgánicos y se encuentra comúnmente en la investigación en ciencias de la vida, como la extracción de proteínas y la solubilización de proteínas de membrana [4][5]. Cuando se combina con CHAPS, MEGA-8 reduce sinérgicamente el CMC y mejora la actividad de la superficie, lo que solubiliza eficientemente las proteínas de membrana en condiciones suaves[6]. MEGA-8 desplaza suavemente a PrBP/δ e inhibe la actividad basal de PDE6 mientras mantiene la integridad y homogeneidad del complejo de holoenzimas, proporcionando así un ambiente detergente ideal para la purificación yy los estudios estrcturales de la fosfodiesterasa retiniana 6[7].
