Methylprednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant effects through the glucocorticoid receptor. The methyl group reduces specific binding to corticosteroid-binding globulin, which may allow better tissue penetration, compared to that of prednisolone. 6α-Methylprednisolone 21-hemisuccinate is a prodrug for methylprednisolone. This compound has superior water solubility compared to the active glucocorticoid.
