ガラニン様ペプチド（GALP）は、豚視床下部から最初に単離され、その後ネズミや人間でも同定された60アミノ酸の神経ペプチドであり、ガラニンとは異なり非アミド化C末端を持つ。そのアミノ酸残基（9-21）は、生物学的に活性のあるN末端（1-13）フラグメントのガラニンと同一である。受容体結合研究により、比較的非選択性があるガラニンとは対照的に、GALPがガラニン受容体2（GALR2）に高い親和性を持ち、GALR1受容体に低い親和性を示すことが明らかになった。さらに、GALPが食欲刺激作用を有し、ガラニンよりも10倍高いオレキシジェン作用を示すことが証明されており、中枢神経系で感情状態にも影響する可能性がある。
