(Glu⁸·⁹)-ヘロデルミンは、ギラモンスターHeloderma suspectumの唾液腺から分離されました。35個のアミノ酸で構成され、人間下垂体アデニル酸シクラーゼ活性化ポリペプチド（PACAP）と血管作動性腸ペプチド（VIP）とそれぞれ53％および42％の相同性を共有しています。哺乳動物のVIP₂受容体に高い親和性があり、哺乳動物のVIPやPACAPと比較してcAMP産生を刺激する効力と有効性が等しいことが示されています。さらに、helodermin-preferring receptorも記載されています。また、GLP-1 / VIP / PACAPペプチドファミリーの他の既知メンバーや哺乳類VIPやPACAPと交差反応しない抗体を用いた免疫組織学的研究からは、「(Glu⁸·⁹)-Helodermin」に対する哺乳類同型体が存在し、VIPやPACAPとは異なることが示唆されました。
