汗腺で発現するタンパク質のデルムシジンは、汗に分泌されて表皮表面に運ばれます。タンパク質の同時処理により、広範なスペクトルの抗菌性47アミノ酸ペプチドであるデルムシジン-1（DCD-1）が生成されます。 デルムシジンとDCD-1Lなどの自然発生フラグメントは、膜透過性を乱さず、異なる表面分子に結合します。Niyonsabaらは、DCD-1Lが角化細胞を刺激してTNF-α、IL-8、CXCL10、CCL20などのサイトカインやケモカインを生成することを報告しています。
