エクオールは、人間の腸内微生物によるイソフラボン系フィトエストロゲンであるダイズエンの代謝生成物から産生される非ステロイド性エストロゲンです。1,2 自然界に存在する(S)-異性体（人間ERαおよびERβに対するEC50=それぞれ85 nMおよび65 nM）はジェニステインと同等のエストロゲン受容体（ER）アゴニスト活性を示しますが、ダイズエインを上回ります。2 (S)- エクオールは ERβ に優先的に結合し（Ki=0.73nM）、ERα に対して約9倍低い親和力を示します(Ki=6.41nM)。1(S)- エクオールはまた、前立腺癌やその他のアンドロゲン介在病態学に重要な影響を与えるジヒドロテストステロンの強力な拮抗剤でもあります。3
