脳性アミロイド血管症（CAA）は、アルツハイマー病で一般的に見られる現象であり、80％以上の場合にアミロイド-Aβ血管沈着が特徴となっています。21-23の位置における変異（例えばオランダ変異E22Q）は主にCAAと関連していますが、認知症または脳出血という驚くべき異なる臨床表現を示します。この「hot spot」以外にあるPiedmont L34V Aβ変異体も同様の出血性フェノタイプを示し、よく研究されているオランダ変異体よりも穏やかです。
