A23187, free acid는 Ca²⁺ 이온 포로테인이다. 쥐 Kupffer 세포에서 A23187은 인지질을 인돌 인산염으로 분해하고 농도와 시간 의존적으로 인돌 인산염을 세포에서 방출시킨다 [1]. HL-60 세포에서 A23187은 세포 내 칼슘 농도를 증가시킨다. 게다가 A23187은 세포 내외에서 반응성 산소종(ROS)을 생성하고 미토콘드리아 투과성 전환에 의존하는 세포 사멸을 유도한다 [2].회장 평활근에서 A23187 (10⁻⁵ M)은 저산소 조건에서 초기 수축과 소폭의 리듬성 수축을 유도하고 인산크레아틴(PCr), ATP 및 글리코겐 함량이 감소되었다. 그런데 무포도당 배지에서 A23187 (10⁻⁵ M)은 초기 수축과 연속적인 리듬수축을 유도하고 ATP와 글리코겐 함량이 현저하게 감소되었다[3]. ZnCl₂ (250 μM)에 내성을 가진 쥐 C6 신경교종 세포에서 A23187 (100 nM)과 Zn²⁺ (150 μM)은 현저하게 세포 사멸을 유도했다. 게다가 A23187 (1.9 nM)은 세포 내 이동 가능한 Zn²⁺ 함량을 현저하게 증가시켰다. 이러한 결과들은 Zn²⁺과 A23187에 의해 유도된 세포 사멸이 A23187에 의해 유도된 Zn²⁺ 유입 증가의 결과임을 시사한다[4].
