MEGA-8は非イオン性のグルコシド界面活性剤であり、オクタノイル(C8直鎖アシル)とN-メチルグルカミンの凝縮で得たものである[1]。MEGA-8は、マイルドと非変性性の特徴を持ち、5–40 °Cの温度では、臨界ミセル濃度(CMC)はほとんど影響されず、そのCMCは、無塩の条件下では70mMであり、高いと低い塩の条件下では、5–64 mMである[2][3]。MEGA-8はよく、生物材質または有機化合物の調製に使われ、タンパク質抽出や膜タンパク溶解などの生命化学研究に使われる[4][5]。CHAPSと併用する時、MEGA-8は相乗的にCMCを減らし、表層活性を増強し、よってマイルドな条件下で、膜タンパクを効果的に溶解する[6]。MEGA-8はPrBP/δを穏やかに取り替え、PDE6の基礎活性を阻害し、同時に、ホロ酵素複合体の完全性と均質性を維持し、網膜ホスホジエステラーゼ6の精製と組織研究に、理想的な浄化環境を提供する[7]。
