Alternariol은 알테르나리아 속 균류가 생산하는 마이코톡신으로 자연계에 널리 분포하며 특히 따뜻하고 습한 조건에서 곡물, 과일, 채소에서 많이 발견된다. Alternariol은 토포이소머라제 I 및 IIα의 촉매 활성을 억제해 DNA의 정상 기능을 방해하고 세포 독성, 유전독성, 돌연병 유발성 및 내분비 교란 효과를 나타낸다. 독성을 보이는 동시에 항균, 항 HIV, 항암 및 면역 조절 등 다양한 생리 활성도 보고되었다[3-4].
체외 실험에서 15–60 μM Alternariol로 인간 결장선암종 Caco-2 세포를 24–48시간 처리하면 S상 및 G2/M상 세포주기 정지를 유도하고 미토콘드리아 막 잠재력의 상실 및 괴사/ 사멸세포의 사멸을 진행한다[5]. 15–30 μM Alternariol로 쥐 RAW 264.7 대식세포를 24–48시간 처리하면 G2/M상 세포주기 정지와 함께 비정상적인 핵 형태 및 다배체 형성이 관찰된다[6].
체내 실험에서 스위스 알비노 쥐 피부에Alternariol(12.5-50 μ g 당 쥐)을 1회 도포한 지 24시간 만에 피부 주름 두께 증가, 부종, 표피 비후 및 염증 반응이 유도되었다[7]. C57BL/6 쥐에게 90일간 5–20 μg/kg Alternariol을 사료로 투여하면 간 지수 상승, 혈청 ALT와AST 수치 증가 및 간 조직 병리학적 변화 등 용량 의존적 간독성이 나타났다[8].
