Salvianolic acid B is a water-soluble phenolic compound extracted from Salvia miltiorrhiza, which has many pharmacological effects, including anti-tumor, anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation. Salvianolic acid B can cross the blood-brain barrier and directly act on the central nervous system [1-4].
Amyloid beta protein fragment 1-40 (Aβ40) shows obvious toxic effects after incubation of PC12 cells for 30 h, and Salvianolic acid B (10nM and 100nM) can significantly reduce the toxic effects of Aβ40 [2]. Salvianolic acid B can inhibit the growth of JHU-022 and JHU-013 cells with IC50 values of 18 and 50μM, respectively. Treatment of JHU-022 cells with different concentrations of Salvianolic acid B (12.5-125μM) for 24 h reduced the level of cycooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein by 50-61% [3].
Salvianolic acid B (80mg/kg) can inhibit tumor growth in nude mouse model of JHU-013 cell xenotransplantation, and the average tumor weight of Salvianolic acid B treatment group is significantly lower than that of untreated group [3]. In the rat model of depression induced by chronic mild stress (CMS), Salvianolic acid B (30mg/kg) can significantly increase the sucrose preference of rats, reduce the rest time of rats in the forced swimming experiment, and improve the depression-like behavior of rats [4].
